WELFARE DIET
ALTERATION SUGGESTED
PEAS, BEANS, AND BARLEY
An alteration in the, welfare type of cliet was suggested by the Key. A. A. Armstrong, chairman of the Seatoun and Bays' Belief Committee, at a recent meeting of the committee; : He suggested that, in view of the increasingly heavy demand on the .Hospital Board'finances, the! welfare type of diet allowed'might be amended. Not only would money be saved, but the recipients would benefit. The diet would be more beneficial if dried peas and beans and barley, and less meat could be allowed. Especially was this the case where children were concerned. A better bulanced diet would probably cost less per head.
"Should not some method be devised whereby those receiving welfare relief to a certain amount should be called upon to devote the equivalent amount from wages earned towards payment of rent?" he aslced. There was ay inclination to. forget the justice due to thn landlord, who in many cases was boing unduly and unnecessarily exploited. A very serious position was developing from what was "the robbery of'rent." This ought to be checked by definite action on the part of the authorities.
