LAUCHLAN CUP
A SOCIAL ADVANCE
In- Now Zealand tho- Royal and | Ancient Game has always hold something of a social cachet, chiefly thoso favoured, by circumstances belonging to tho various clubs, ■ but in the home of golf, Scotland, it is the gamo of the public, artisans and workmen taking part, if their handicap is good enough, in inter-club fixtures.. Mr. J. B. Jjauchlan, by tlio donation pf tho Lauchluii Cup, for competition amongst the social clubs of Wellington,' brought a breath Of the heathor into New Zealand, and mado inter-club competition on. a handicap basis possiblo for the first tjmo. Hitherto only golfers of a handicap of 8-6, or thereabouts, were considered golfers competitively, but the Lauchlan Cup has altered ! all. that. A perusal of tho handicaps attachodi to* the scores below will enable a grasp of the fact that' long handicap golf is the best socially,'and .the. extent to which golf sociability-is indicated by tho contest can best. be appreciated by the gross handicaps of tho teams entered, which vary from .16 to 64, for teams b£ four.. The ; fbUr individual rounds would not naturally iivany .instance compete with the lowest aggregate of the national championships, but Micro were individual instances of merit. T. B. Lawson's 75 net on tho 12 mark represented, a very steady round, two below his handicap. The northerly was strong, and his performance on handicap, though not tho lowest net result, was remarkably good and represented steady play. Duncan was half buried at the third, and was out m 39, though he was driving a long ball, over the ridge at the eighth, and playing well except for a tendency to be short with approaches and putts. Sixteen strokes in the lead, Wellcslcy Club won easily. THE RESULTS. The club scores Were as follows:— ■ ■ W&llesley Club. H.! P. V- Blundell (Wei- ■' .' ft . liugton) ...;....,.'..... 91 9 82 T E.
