GOOD SAVES MADE

A MAN INJURED

The services of the Fire Brigade were required for two fires, last night, and in both cases good saves were made. The first call was received lit 11.30 p.m., to an unoccupied, house, 76, Seatoun Heights road. The eastern wall and the ceiling of the house were slightly damaged by fire and one room was very slightly damagdd by heat and smoke. The house is owned by Mrs. Maud Munt, of 74, Scatoun Heights road. At 1.32 a.m. the brigade was called to a tbirteen-roomed wooden building, 70, Chaytor street, Karori. The building, which is partitioned in two, is used as two flats, and a fire had broken out in one flat, which is unoccupied. This flat was damaged; by fire and water. When the brigade arrived the fire was spreading to the other flat, which is occupied by Mr. George Matthews.'Very slight damage was done to this flat, however, and, considering the high wind which was: blowing, an exceptionally good save was made by the brigade. While escaping from his flat, Mr. Matthews was slightly injured and. had to be taken to the Bowen Street Hospital by the City Ambulance. The building is owned by Mr. Henry Ducat, who is believed to be in Napier. There is no insurance on the contents; BRIGADE KEPT BUSY. The brigade is. having a very busy time at present, for in the last four days it has been called out to nine fires, as well as two false alarms. All the fires have occurred about midnight or in the early morning, and have required strenuous work on the part of the men. This was particularly so in the', case of the fire on Wellington ter-race-early on Sunday morning, and at the fire in the shop of M'Kenna and Co., Lambton quay, on Monday morning. In the latter case the intense heat and extremely thick smoke gave the brigade considerable trouble, and. most of the men were in bed-next day suffering from the effects of the smoke. '.
