ATHLETICS

MEETING OF CENTRE

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The quarterly meeting; oC delegates to the Wellington Amateur Athletic. Centre was held-last evening. Mr.. A. C. -Kitto presided. A letter from the manager of the Wellington Show Association, in which it was stated that the association would bo glad to consider, any oiler the centre might make for the use of the new sports stadium, was referred to the.executive of the centre. .. : Support was given to the proposal to hold a sports gathering on a large scale at the 1939-40 Wellington Centennial-Exhibi-tion. The.chairman mentioned the possibility of the Empire Games being held in Wellington or the New Zealand championship meeting during the Exhibition period. The Manawatu Sub-Centre advised that several of the clubs in its district had asked for a remission. of their affiliation and registration fees for last season owing to the fact that they had.not functioned. The matter, it was stated, opened up a big question, and the centre was asked for a ruling as to what action should be taken. It was decided to ask the sub-centre to supply a list of the clubs concerned and then refer the matter to the New Zealand Council for consideration. The Harrier Sub-Committee applied for a grant of £15 to cover expenses during the season. It was decided to make a grant of £5 in the meantime. A motion was carried disagreeing with the inclusion of junior high jump and 100 yards championships in the. New Zealand] championship programme. The general feeling of the delegates was. that all the centres would not be represented in these J two events, and that in such circumstances they would become a farce. The recommendation made at the conference oh' centres at Dunedin at the end of February, that there should bo a standardised order of "events for New Zealand championship meetings was considered to be an excellent scheme. The view was expressed by Mr. H. M'Cormick that a standardised programme would prevent any suggestion of "juggling" on the part of the centre conducting the championS^llS| . '■
