SWIMMING CARNIVAL

SOME GOOD RACES

Many close fiuishes were seen on Saturday afternoon .at the Worser Bay Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club's annual Carnival, held for the first time in the Te Aro Baths. The weather was not all that might have been wished for, but there was an- attendance of over 200, and the gate takings amounted to £18, an amount that was'considered quite satisfactory by club officials. One of the most interesting events on the programme was the 50 yards Wellington' Centre championship, which was won by C. R Claridge in 26 l-ssec. Claridge got an excellent start, taking the lead immediately. About half-way across, however, ' Blakeley forged up into second place, and made a big effort to catch Claridge. Although he lost time by hitting one of .the ropes Claridge maintained. his lead, and finished with a yard to Bpare. Another interesting feature was a relay race between a team of 1910 Worser Bay Club members and present members under the age of 21. The old-timers, L. W. Green, H. Silver, G. R. Green, V. L. Allen, and F. Wilton, showed that they could still teach the boys something, and finished with a lead of twenty-five yards. Several ladies' events were held, the most interesting of which was the 50 yards breaststroke. The race evolved into a contest between Mrs. B. Eiordan and Miss K. Dick, who were almost level during the last ten yards. Mrs. Eiordan gained slightly at the mdi and won on the touch. Her time for the' race was 49 seconds. A _ flying squadron inter-club relay over a distance of 500 yards, each man swimming 100 yards, proved quite spectacular, and resulted in a win for the Marauui team. At the conclusion of the carnival Mr. P. Coira announced that the following had 'been selected to represent Wellington 'at the New Zealand championships, which are to be held at Wanganui this week: J. C. Blakeley, E. Pelham, F. Mollier, F.
