SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

Over a thousand people journeyed out to Karori on Saturday afternoon to be ; present at the Very successful garden i party which was held in the boautifullyI a id-out grounds of Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland's home, "Homewoqd." The :'otc, which had been organised by the ndies' auxiliary of the Free Ainbu.■mco, was'a particularly fine effort, and resulted in about £-150 being collected for the Mayor's Earthquake Fund. 10 very one's amusement was provided for. ' There was.tennis, for.ihe young and very active, miniature" golf and ■ivoquet for the less energetic, and for chose who did not seek exercise the begonia house and conservatory were open. The wonderful; blooms of the rarest varieties and colours were greatly . admired. Winding paths led through :gaily-coloured flower-bods and more sombre native shrubs, with here and there a fountain tucked away in some corner. Unexpected turns brought ■one to summer houses and pergolas. On tho wiile lawn the Boys' Institute Baud played attractive music, and in a far corner a stall for ices did a big trade. Tea was served in. another part of the grounds, and a.fortuneteller, an "Aunt Stilly," and various sideshows caused lots of amusement. A tennis tournament was in progress during the afternoon, and swimming, sports attracted a large crowd. Obstacle races, competitions in swimming and diving, and exhibitions by well-known' swimmers proved very interesting. Mrs. C, J. B. Norwood, who opened the fete, woro a frock of black satin and pink georgette, a black georgette coat, and a wide-brimmed straw hat. She thanked Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland Con behalf of the auxiliary) for so generously londing their grounds, and presented" Mrs. .Sutherland with an orna- . mental basket of. fruit. She explained that the proceeds, which had been intended for the Ambulance funds, would ! now go to the Earthquake Fund. She j nlso thanked all the members of the • committee who had helped to make the ! fete a success and had given their services during the afternoon, and also (hose who had supplied the afternoon tea. Stone and Mr. Clark; Aunt Sally, Mr. N. Manthel; raffle, Mrs. A. jliutosoii; swimming, Mr. A. Sutherland :md Mr. W. Norwood; tennis, Mr. N. Wilson and Mrs. C. George; croquet, Mrs. J. Munt and Miss Faulknor (Napier); sweots stall, Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Dixon. Others who assisted.were Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Purdie, and Mrs. M'Vicar, Miss M. Griffiths, Miss V. Osborn and Mr. G.
