PETONE CLUB
The Petone Rifle Club fired a- further competition counting for the Longfield handicap aggregate (Rough and Co. Cup), at Trentham on Saturday, ranges 800 and 000 yards. The conditions were, again extremely difficult, as there was a strong gusty wind blowing; and alterations of eight degrees windage between shots were often required. The attendance was good, but for the most part members were disappointed with their shooting, which fell far short of the club standard for these ranges. At 800 yards, WVM'lver was heartily congratulated when he registered a possible score of 50. He was easily*, the top scorer, the next being that registered. by J. Ashman and W. H. Ballinger, with 45 each, with .E. Ballinger next, ii. At the 000 .yards distance there were several "crashes," and it seemed to be impossible to judge the strength of the wind with accuracy. Several "times a gusty change would occur whilst the bullet was in flight -to the target, and a. hit of low value jrould
be the consequence. E. A^eitch topped the scoring here with a good 45, followed by G. R. Bull 44, A. O'Donaell 42. The best aggregates off the gun were far short of the club standard of 91, and three members tied with 85 each (B. Veitch, A. O'Donnell, and E. Ballinger). The spoonwinners for the day were E. Ballinger and A. O'Donnell in A Grade; 13. Veitch . in B Grade; and AY. Sanders in C Grade. The competition for the Longfield handicap aggregate is nearing a close, and only one shoot at 800 and 900 yards is required to decide the winner. . E. Veitch holds a commanding position, and would appear to be a certain winner; but the competition for the other leading positions is keen. The leading aggregates arc as follow:—E. Veitch 625, T. Chapman 612, C. Lusty ■ COO, J. Ashman 597, F. Bartosh 590, R. H. Nicholl 537, O. Pedersen 584, P. Stewart 577. Next Saturday the club will fire a musketry and qualification course. The following are the scores:—
