KARORI CHAMPIONSHIP

CROXTON THE WINNER

The Karori Rifle Club fired their fourth and final match of the short range series of the championship, concluding that competition, together with the handicap aggregate, Judd and Randell aggregate, Johnston Cup, and Collins Cup. The weather was fine with a varying wind, veering from left to right with sudden changes. The scores were good, four members equalling the club standard of 92. Particular interest was attached to the championship, which was won by 11. V. Croxton. At the commencement of the day's shoot, J. I. King held the leading position 6 points ahead of Croxton, with H. Boon lying third. King, shooting in brilliant style, registered 48, Croxton 47, Boon 46. King thereby established an extra point lead. At 600 yards King made a very ragged start, dropping 5 points in his first three shots. His fourth found the bullseye, as did the fifth and sixth, and in seven shots he had dropped 6 points as against 3 by Croxton and 4 by Boon. With a lead of i points and only three shots to go, things looked easy for King, but his eighth, shot failed to connect, and a miss was signalled. Croxton, gauging the conditions beautifully/ found the bullseye, making him one point lead and two shots to go. King, away first with his ninth, registered an inner, while Croxton's was a magpie, this bringing them equal. With one shot to go, a central bullseye from Croxton and an inner from King decided the championship for the 1931 season, and making the sixth win for Croxton, who was heartily congratulated by all members. King, who only started shooting two seasous ago, has performed brilliantly this season, and, by virtue of his performances, the previous season he has proved himself! a marksman of class. T. H. K. Boon, who was runner-up to Croxton last season, shot solidly, and improved his score to within 5 points of the winner. Handicap Aggregate.—This competition is confined to men receiving handicap and was won in convincing fashion by J. I. King, with a 13-point lead. King, who is the reigning champion of the Karori Miniature Rifle Club, shot brilliantly throughout, and was receiving the smallest handicap. The runner-up was F. T. Freeman, a former winner. Judd and Kandell Aggregate.—This _ is the club's "grand aggregate," in which all shoots are counted and none are dropped. An easy win for J. I. King- resulted, leading the runner-up by 16 points. Johnston Cup.—-For scratch scores over the short ranges of the championship series. T. H. K. Boon romped home ahead, of Croxton —a popular win.. Collins Cup.—After King crashed at 600 yards it was left to J. M'Kelvie and F. T. Freeman to decide the winner. This the former did by two points, and registering his second win in this competition. The weekly competition winner proved to be F. W. Ching, with a score of 46 at each range, counting out Croxton and Frahkland with like totals. H. P. Dore proved an easy winner in the handicap class, using 3 handicap to reach the club standard. R. D. Potts, with 89, was runner-up. On Saturday next a practice shoot will be held over the short range, and it_ is hoped to arrange the annual match with Greytown on 14th March. Members are requested to keep this date open.
