VETERANS' GALA DAY
The Wellington Bowling Centro's veterans' tournament, which is open to players 70 years of age and over, is being played on the "Wellington Club's green this afternoon. There are 32 rinks competing.. .
Prior to the commencement of play, Mr. H. G. Mayer, president, of the centre, expressed sympathy with the relatives of those veterans who had passed away since last tournament, and also with those who had suffered in the earthquake. He extender! a cordial welcome to the veterans, and said the tournament had now been carried on for some years, and was regarded by the centre as one of the most important fixtures of the season. It was a happy thought that prompted Mr. S. Potter to inaugurate what was primarily a social gathering. They were particularly glad to ace present Mr. William Freeman, aged 97, of Seatoun, without whom a veterans' day would not be complete. In addition to the veterans taking part, there was a large number of old players watching the games, as well as a fair gathering of visitors. Mr. Freeman sent down the silver kitty and two good bowls, after which play commenced.
Up till midday to-day 232 refugees were being taken care of at Lower Hntt. The names and addre'ssea will be sopplied on application to the local Borough Council offices.
