INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Architects is to be held cm Thursday. The annual report refers, among other matters, to the proposed amendment to the Institutes Act, submitted to the House of Representatives as a private member's Bill by Mr. P. A. Wright, M.P. Representatives of itlie .Instituto had given evidence before the Education Committee of, the House of Representatives, and as no opposition was apparent it was thought the amendment would meet with the approval of the Legislature. However, during the debate on'the third reading certain opposition was shown, and as Mr. Wright had been granted only a very short time for the passage of the, Bill he^was compelled to withdraw it. The debate had, shown, the nature of the; opposition, and steps;,will be taken during the coming session of Parliament to meet tho opposition and again bring the amendment before the Hpuso of Representatives. With regard to local bodies and the signing'of plans, the executive committee forwarded a circular letter to all local bodies throughout the Dominion urging them to include in their bylaws a clause requiring all plansl deposited with' them to be'signed by the author. Several local bodies notified the Institute that they were adopting the suggestion made, and it was felt that others would also come into line when they fully realised the advantages to be gained. The executive coinmittco conferred ■with the Builders' Federation regarding the interpretation of clause 5 of the general conditions of contract, and had a circular letter sent to members drawing attention to the necessity of final drawings and specifications being prepared so as to comply, fully with the bylaws, enabling a permit to be obtained without any material alterations being made. An exhibition of students' drawings in the main centres had been arranged to take place during the next three months.
