AT NEW PLYMOUTH
LADY QUEX AND OTAIRI FIT
(Special to "The Everting Post.") NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. • »The New Plymouth track was in excellent order for the work "this morn- : ing, though, tho trial grass and the outside of the course proper 'were hard after the recent higli wind. ■' Nearly all the galloping took place on the plough, which was in. good order. A strong wind assisted the horses down the 'back, but they had to run the last two furlongs again it. Unless stated otherwise, all the trials took.place on the plough. ', i ' ■'•■ Tea Queen was the first out, and she moved Very evenly over five-furlongs in lmin ssec. . '■.■"■ .'■",, Malayan and Open Cheque, were not doing their best over the last part of five furlongs in- lmin 7£sec. '■;,.. Vertigern was the first of the Cup horses to gallop, being sent a mile. He did not hop away too well, and took 14sec for the first furlong, but then, moving in attractive style, he reeled off the remaining seven furlongs in lmin 31see, making lmin 45sec for the full distance. He looks well, and is evidently coming back ;to his old form. ■ ■ , . : . High Falutin' and Cashier wore next, and they were sent over the same distance. They did the first furlong in 13,1-ssec, and the last seven in lmin '31isec, the full distance taking lmin 44 4-ssec. High Falutin' was. going comfortably ahead of hisi companion at the finish, and did his Consent, with L. Morris , aboard, slipped over five furlongs in lmin 3 sec, and did it easily. He took 25se<j for the first two furlongs and 37sec for the first three furlongs. He is in great order. Melissa wont seven furlongs at _ a good three-quarter pace on the outside of the course proper. Tenterden went twice- round at halfpace. ■ Chief Savage did three-quarter pace work. He has not done as well so far on tho trip as was expected. Otairi and Llandudno were responsible for the gallop of the! morning when they left tevpn furlongs bohind in lmin 294 sec. The pace was on all the way. " They took 26Jsec for the first two furlongs, and lmin 3sec fotthelast five furlongs, and both horses did it well. Thcro is no doubt that both are in the pink of condition, and the former is likely to start favourite in the Cup. Llandudno has no engagements tho first day, but figures in the handicap on Saturday. First Acre went a mile by. himself in lmin 4osec, and did his work in good style, the last three, furlongs taking 40sec. He disappointed his connections at Hawcia, but may make amends here. Bayacro and Piako were always going easily over fivo furlongs in. lmin 7sec. Werata took lmin s*see for a similar distance, but be was not asked to do his best. True Lap, on the trial grass, took lmin 4}sec for five furlongs. He showed plenty of pace over the early stages, but stopped badly at the finish. Democratic went seven furlongs, the last six taking lmin 19sec. ; W. C. Griffith's team—Royal Parade, White Fang, Merry Cry, and Royal Bengal—wore all given pace work. They bear a woll-trained appearance, and should be capable of paying expenses. S»ile Star did half-pace work. She
was ,well backed the second day at • Hawera, but never looked like winning once the straight was reached. Eidgemount went once round at half pace.. Chopin, who looks well, did threequarter pace work over a circuit. Gold Dawii was responsible for a brilliant five furlongs on the trial grass, reeling off the distance in lmin lisec. She took 12sec for the first furlong, 23sec for two' furlongs, and 3oisec for three furlongs. Sho is undoubtedly in great fettle, but the company in tho Flying Handicap on Thursday may prove a little too select for her. Lady Quex, Easter Time, Hinepuni, and BoyarFinance did pace work on ,the inner. Lady Qucx did a-brilliant trial yesterday.morning, when,.with the assistance, of Eoyal Finance, over, tho first half-inilc and Littlo Doubt over the last two furlongs, she galloped six furlongs in lmin 13 3-ssec. She did the first half-mile in 47 l-osec,:and her eft'o/: shows that Hunting Cry and Ammon Ea will have to be at their best, on Saturday to beat her in the Stakes. This gallop took place on the course proper against the'rails. \ . : . Little - Doubt went seven furlongi this morning, the last five taking lmin lOsec; . ..;'-■''.,. Gold Gleam, and Cereal went well over half a mile in 50 3-ssec, ■ both doing it well. •■■-.'-' Crehna Town and Omep did a leisurely seven furlongs in lmin. 38 4-ssec. ■' •. . '~ '. Manly and Singer took lmin 21see for six furlongs, but they could- have improved on this. :. J. T. Jameson, with In the Shade, Eaglet, and Ammon Ea,. and J. Cameron, with.
