The Public Works Department is bringing its resources in plant and staff to bear in cleaning up the streets of Napier, Hastings, and Wairoa. Work has already commenced in Napier. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. W. B. Taverner) in a statement last night detailed the Department's plans and operations. , "A start has been made by the Department i'# clearing the streets . of Napier," said Mr. Taverner. "A large fleet of lorries is already engaged, togqther with some hundreds of men in addition to tho naval forces. Miv Campbell,, tho inspecting engineer of the Department, who proceeded to Napier by aeroplane early oh Tuesday afternoon, has gonle to Hastings to organise operations there." Mr. Taverner also mentioned that the Napier water supply was improving hourly, and that his Department was expected to have certain parts of the1 sewerage system working shortly. An effort was being made to. communicate with the .Public Works Department's staff at Wairoa, to instruct them to proceed with similar work in that town. Temporary accommodation for the various Government De- J partments had been arranged in Napier. Arrangements had also been made for air compressors and drills to be sent to Napier to facilitate the removal of the larger masses of masonry and debris, and steam shovels were being pro; vided to assist m. the ' excavations. The disposal of quantities of debris presented a problem, but this had been, solved. Satisfactory arrangements had been made with the Napier Harbour Boaid for a suitable dump.
