"CRIMINAL INSULT"
RUMOURS OF MARTIAL LAW
.'' ' ~~~ \ ' AN'EMPHATIC DENIAL
Emphasising the "denials by the Mm'- ' ister for. Lands (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) and the Hon. E. Masters that martial law is in force' at Napier and Hast--1 ings, the Minister of Health (the Hon. '. A. J. Stallworthy) has sent the following telegram to-day from Napier to the Primo Minister: — . Press'headlines re martial law criminal insult to Napier and Hastings citizens, whose wonderful fortitude and heroism under indescribable/ ' calamity is truly wonderful.' Please ; contradict this ridiculous statement. The general behaviour and' co-opera-tion of, the people compels my upbounded admiration. Everything that : can be- done is being accomplished in an orderly and admirable way, and what has really been accomplished reveals a triumph of organisation and hard, self-sacrificing work ■ under ' greatest ■■ difficulties.
