OFFERS OF SHELTER
SOME DISAPPOINTMENTS
' Owing to lack of information, the Bed Cross authorities, who have charge of billeting arrangements for refugees,: cannot accurately "gauge billeting requirements until the refugees actually arrive in. Wellington and particulars of their cases are taken. In some cases those who have offered to take in refugees have been advised that their [homes may be required, and then when the trains and boats have arrived it has been found : that many of the refugees have had relatives or friends to go to and it has riot been necessary to billet them. The society realises the disappointment caused to those who have thus unnecessarily prepared for refugees, but asks ; these householders and all who have offered aecomm'odation to realise the difficulties of the position and to "stand by," even if their hospitality is not required immediately. Many residents have offered to take in children, bnt not many refugee children are arriving unaccompanied, and so far no family parties have been separated in billeting. If parents later return to Napier there may then be more requests for homes where children may stay. All inquiries of the Bed Cross Society regarding refugees should be made on telephones 45-150 and 45-151.
