MATAMATA PEOSPECTS
GOOD FIELDS* FOR TO-MORROW
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") , AUCKLAND, sth February With the exception of one race, there are good fields for the Matamata Racing Club's Meeting on Saturday, and interesting racing is.anticipated. The race track at Matamata is one of the best on- the Auckland country circuit, and although there is no grandstand accommodation, the meeting is always popular with .Northern racegoers. The class in the Tirau Hnck Hurdles is not strong. If started, Marble King should be very dangerous: However, there is a report'that he'might not run, and in his .absence St. Warrigal, a grand fencer, who notched a third at Ellerslie, and Mashoor may be as likely as any. The best of the others may be Lupin Abbey and Bennie, although Bennie lacks experience. The favourites may be Marble King, St. Warrigal, and Lupin Abbey: On form Fraser and Te Homai, stand out in the Hinuera Handicap, but there are a number of unknown quantities,- and there might be something to beat. The top-weights, who are making good weight concessions .to the others, Searcher and Maunga King, have shown^-a little form, and may show up. Hit the Deck, a wellbred three-year-old in A. Tinker's stable, has sblown promise, and although still a trifle green, may be dangerous with .his pull in the weights. The horses who may be fancied are Fraser, Te Homai, and Hit the Deck for the reason that they are very well and also trained on the course. Prince Val and Standfast must be respected in the Waharoa Handicap. Taneriri has improved with his racing at Takapuna, and will not be out of it. Investors may follow form and support Standfast and, Prince .Val. • Recent form suggests good; chances for Manawhenua and Haviland in the Matamata Hack Cup, \ and at the weights the
preference may be for Manawhenua. Thurnus, Unoco, and Indolent stay on fairly well, and Protomint would have a chance in the hands of a capable lightweight. The main fancies may be Manawhenua, Haviland, and Indolent. Lady Vane, who finished second in the Avondale Stakes and third ii» the Welcome Stakes, has the best credentials of the novices in the Putaruru Stakes. She lias been galloping well, and her prospects appear very bright. Laptown ha? .shown speed, and may be Lady Vane's chief danger. The likeliest of the others, may be Grand Talk and Rekaraurau. Favouritism will lie between Lady Vane and Laptown. , If caught in the right humour the moody Snow Prince should go well in the Okoroire Handicap, in which the most difficult he may have to beat may be I Lucess, Valcuir, and Nassone. Investors may give suppoit to Snow Prince, Valcuir, and Lucess. , Sir Kay is making liberal allowances to the others in the Railway Hack Handicap, but he has ability to run six furlongs very smartly, and his prospects are considered very bright. His chief danger might come from Hiata, who won at Thames, Valreina, and Protomint. There will bo support tor Sir Kay, Hiata, and valreina. . , , Form in the Waharoa Handicap may furnish a line on the prospects in the Walton Handicap, as a number of the candidates arc booked to run in the former event. .Horses who read nicely placed are Romford, Pi-ince Val, and Valroe. There will only be three horses going from Ellershe to Matamata. They are lanenri Munawhemia, and Bennie. The trip will be undertaken by motor float on the morning of the races, and will prob- , ably occupy from four to live hours jUannwhenua is a very fit hon,e, and after his .gallop this morning at Kllerslie track watchers are enthusiastic about his chance in.the Hack Cup.
