MAORIS AND THE LEVY

VOLUNTARY ENROLMENTS

The Unemployment A^t exempts Maoris from payment of the levy, states the chairman of the Unemployment Board, the Hon. S. G. Smith, but contains a proviso that "any Native within tho meaning of the Native Land Act, 1909, may, with the consent of the board, elect to becomo -a contributor to the Unemployment Fund." Up to the present time the applications of 350 Maoris to become contributors have been granted by the board. Tho Maoris of tho Kotorua district, with '.the idea of supplementing the relief wages for their unemployed,,have voluntarily subscribed £250, and this is being spent chiefly on farm work, in connection' with the Native land development schemes now being actively carried out in that locality.
