TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES
WAGES AND STAFF
RETRENCHMENT POSSIBLE
At last evening's meeting of the City Council, Councillor C, 11. Chapman, M.P., asked the Mayor, as chairman of the Tramways Committee, if he would give an assurance that the number of tramway,- employees and their wages would not bo reduced. Mr. Troup said that the committee had, in accordance with the recommendations of the General Manager, made certain proposals which had already been put into effect in regard to the hours worked. With regard to reduction of wages and shortening of hands, Mr. Troup said that to his knowledge no definito proposals had been put forward. To give the council any assurance that that would not bo done was altogether beyond him at present. If the need arose there might be reductions in regard to the number of men, wages, and hours worked. ■
