CHILDREN'S BATHING PARTY

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. A drowning' tragedy occurred near the Komako Settlement, in the Poliangina Valley, this morning, Miss E. Dommett, a school teacher, 23 years of age, and one of her pupils, Vornon Charles Ferguson, 9 years of age, losing their lives. The only eye-witnesses were three other school children. When the school assembled this morning only four pupils were present. Towards midday the teacher suggested a swimming lesson in tho backwash of the river, where the water is over six feet deep. . Other children state that at thu time of th-e mishap Miss Domnietfc was teaching Ferguson to swim, but they were not taking particular notice. The first warning of the tragedy was when they saw Miss Dommett fall and float down into the rapids. Ferguson had dropped into deep water from Miss Dommett's arms. As the children could do nothing, one of them hastened for help. The others wont after the teacher, whom they dragged out unconscious some distance down the stream. Near-by settlers who arrived on the scene as soon as possible got the boy out of a hole, and tried artificial respiration, but without success.
