MISSING FIREWOOD
Tiro men who were cutting firewood at Akatarawa missed some of it recently. With a police constable' they visited two neighbouring week-end cottages, and found some firewood in the basement ot one and on the verandah of the other. The occupiers of the cottages appeared before Mr. T. B. M'Neil, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Upper Hutt yesterMorris Brickman was charged with the theft of about half a cord of firewood, valued at £1 2s 6d, from T. Jones and li. Harper. He pleaded not guilty. His defence was that he had taken the wood.in good faith, thinking it belonged to a man with whom he had had business, and ■whom .he intended to pay. Before he was able to pay'the man the police intervened. He was convicted and fined £2. Norman Leslie Stevens was charged with the theft of firewood, valued at 2s 6d, from Jones and Harper. He also pleaded not guilty. .....-■ He said that he had bought the found on his verandah from'the same man' that Brickman had intended to pay. Besides this, his little girl had.brought Jiome some wood and put it with the wood he hud paid for. The case against, him was dismissed. Mr. F. W. Onglcy appeared for both defendant?.
