END-TO-END VICTORY
GAY CREST SUCCESSFUL
MAIN RACE AT WOODVILLE
Gay Crest led practically from end to end in the Bolton Handicap, the main i race at Woodville yesterday, but he had to be ridden right out to hold off the little-fancied Bold Front by a short head. The pace the'winner set was fast throughout, as the time, 2min 7 4-osec, indicates, but he saw it out so stoutly, and held oft' his challengers so valiantly down the long straight, that he must now enter into consideration for the main holiday handicaps. He is in better form than he was at Riccarton, and appears to be back to the form he was aljlo to produce in Australia during the spring. ■ After the race an inquiry was called by the stipendiary stewards into alleged interference caused to Bold Front by Gay Crest's boring over on to him in the iun down the straight, but after some deliberation it was decided that no action should be taken. Gay Crest, Tuubridge, Paraloo, Bold Front, High Fahim', and Balloon led through the straight tbe first time, and the order' of the leaders did not change to the half-mile. Gay Crest and Tun-1 bridge entered the home stretch together I ahead o£ Bold Front, Paratoo, koyal^j Game, aud High Falutin', but-then Gay Crest, ■ running wide, took sole charge, and although Bold Front came at- him from the distance, and High Falutin moved up along the: rail, he finished full of nmniss to beat the former by a short head, wife the latter a length) further away. Merry Damon came from the back into* fourth place, and Paratoo, Kawbakina, Tunbridge, and Balloon were best or" the others. Gay Crest -was all the rage m the batting, being over £100 better supported than High Falutin', with .Paratoo and ■Merry Damon somewhat less in demand. Bold Front paid twice, as .much' for second as the winner. He was .yery close up, and had he not b&n carried out by the winner, might well have been the victor. High Falutin' had-a great chance with his light weight, but he ' unaccountably drifted over the middle stages, and then attempted to steal a march along the rail in the straight. Paratoo :-found the pace ( too hot. Merry Damon again did not come, .on the scene till late, after trailing the field over the early 'stages.' Royal Game made a strong run three furlongs fromhome, but the effort was quickly expend-! cd. Tunbridge, tackling open company,; "made a very fair showing, aiuLihe was partly responsible for the fast pace set}
