UPPER HUTT RELIEF
APPLICATION FOR A GRANT
It was reported to the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night that there were 38 married men and 7 single men registered in the borough as unemployed. Notice was received from the ladies' committee for unemployed relief that it had disbanded, having collected £69 4s IOJd. It was decided to write to the secretary, Mrs. M. Bradley, expressing the council's appreciation of the work done by her and her coworkers on the committee. The Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) said that the amount collected would be subsidised by £2 to £1 by tho Unemployment Board, making the total money available £210. The council decided, on the motion of Councillor J. Blewman, to apply to the Unemployment Board for a direct grant, apart from the subsidy, as except for the £210 the council had no money for tho relief of unemployment.
