EVENING SPORTS

IN-COLD CONDITIONS

MEETING AT ATHLETIC PARK

A helping hand was given by the southerly wind last evening to competitors in tho sprint races at the sports mooting held between six and seven o'clock at Athletic Park by the Miramar Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, and as a result tho times were on tho fast side. In the longer events the wind was of much less assistance; in fact, in parts it was against the runners. A dull, gray sky overhead and a cold, annoying wind did not make conditions any too pleasant; but, nevertheless, there were somo good contests, although performances in somo of the events possibly were not as attractive as at one or two of the previous evening meetings. Several of the Wellington Club's members were resting after thoir week-end trip to Wanganui, and perhaps also in view of tho Hutt Club's meeting at the Lower Hutt Becreation Ground to-morrow evening. The Jady athletes were given a run over 100 yards to start tho meeting, but it was a mistake. The event on the programme for the ladies was a 75 yards handicap. Two heats over 100 yards had been run before the mistako was discovered, and after a "breather" the ladies went back for the 75 yards dash. Two of the competitors who gained places in the 100 yards heats — Miss P. Moore (6yds) and Miss J. Murray (lyd)—failed to qualify for the fina\ over 75 yards. Their places in the final were taken by Miss D. Killeen (7*yds) and Miss B. Battersby (6yds), who had been unplaced in tho 100 yards ' heats. The final was won by Miss E. Sharp (3yds) by two feet from Miss A. O'Brien (B£yds), with Miss Killeon next; There were four heats in the 100 yards open handicap, and the ladies were good. In the absence of" J. T. Fleming and C. H. Jenkins, H. Le Grove, on 4yds, was nearest the scratch mark.. Le Grove won the first heat in 10 l-ssec, and was second in the final to N. Glover (7iyds), S. Fcrgusson (7 yds), the winner of the second heat, was third. The final provided a close finish, Glover, Le Grovo, Fergusson, Weipey, and Telfar all finishing within inches of each other. A one and a half miles handicap drew twelve starters, who made quite an interesting race of it. F. Lawer (90 yds) finished well to win from G. Prosser, who was on the scratch mark with J. Shepherd and D. Pedersen. Third place went to H, M^Kinnon, a young runner of promise, who ran well for tho Wellington Club at Wanganui on Saturday night. In the 300 yards Handicap for juniors another good field faced the starter. A. Badland (12yds) was not fully extended to win from 8. Stott (syds). A field of eighteen took part in the 440 yards handicap, with T. Pickering (2yds) and C. Thompson (Byds) on the back marks. W. Ogg, the Olympic Club j runner, better known as a half-miler, j with a useful start of IS',yards, led the: field home rather comfortably. ! S. J. Gudsell and W. Tonkin hadj their usual duel in the walking' event; —the only competitors' again. These; two are keeping the walks going. The; distance was two miles, and Gudsell, who was up with Tonkin after one! mile had been covered, won easily. j To finish off the programme, there was a relay race for the men and the lady athletes, and each was won byj teams representing the Wellington' Club. •■ : THE RESULTS. \ Tlic results of the events In detail are .as,', follow: — . . - • .', 'i; 75 Yards Ladies' Handicap..—First licut: Jliss>| i K.
