ASHBURTON MEETING
GLENROWAN BEATS BEAU GESTE
SHORTAGE OF MONEY
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, 6th December. Glorious Veather favoured the Ashburton County; Racing Club for the Summer Meeting. There was an average attendance, but the shortage of money was evidenced in ■' the totalisator investments which dropped to £7401, compared with £9965 last year. The racing was fairly good, though not exciting. The starting was patchy, -the dispatch of the Moreton Hack Handicap being very bad. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Jael, a three-year-old filly by Shambler from JudithJ was favourite for the Highweight Handicap. She and Parysia "were responsible for the pace, but- they faded out in the straight. Dumblane always looked a winner over the last two furlongs, and won decisively from- Shortly, who outstayed Quinopal for second. Footfall '.ras close up after being well placed all the way, and he will get some money soon, posisbly before the holidays are over. Audience ran a fair race. Dumblane is unreliable, but when in the mood he is pretty good. Smithereens, Mime, and Sporting Life lost all chance by failing-to"'go off smartly. WINCHMORE HANDICAP. The Lord Thomond-Painkiller bracket was first fancy in the Winchmore Hack Handicap, though not so hotly backed as was expected owing to Red Royal, with Roy Reed on his back, being well supported. Flair set a strong pace to the straight, and then failed to run on. The bracketed pair had the finish- to themselves. Lord; Thomond always held Painkiller safe. They are very well, and will get some more money in hack sprints at Manawatu and Marton during the holidays. ■ Red Royal finished on well to get third, and he is nearly due for a win. Flair has pace, but she is a great disappointment, as she cannot, stay. Shatter ran a solid race, finishing close up after getting off badly. Giggleswick, Owl's Flight, and Balolo ran into trouble at different stages. MELROSE TROT. The Melrose Trot attracted a field of eighteen. Nyallo Silk, carrying Mr. J.R. M'Kenzie's colours, was a hot favourite. The race was one of the best of the kind ever seen for some time. There was a big bunch all the way to the straight, where Omadora went on to beat Belle Somerton by | two lengths. Little Victor finished fast hah: a length away, followed by Logan Fraser, Fleet Arrow, and Eiffleton Lass in ft bunch. TINWALD HANDICAP. High Court was scratched for the Tinwald Handicap, leaving only Beau Geste and Glenrowan. The latter, who was the outsider, though nearly as well backed, led Bean'"Gepte all the way. The pace was slow, the first two furlongs taking 29sec, and half a mile 55sec. From there the pace was! clapped on, but Glenrowan, with a lead of three lengths at that stage, never looked' like losing, and won easily by >a length.' It was a case of a stayer trying to beat a sprinter for speed. Glenrowan is just coming back to his best form. Beau Geste moved tenderly on the hard track. LAGMHOR PLATE. Solwit, the. winner of the Lagnihor Plate, was always in a handy position. Segrave and Weatherly led to the straight, where the.last-named was done with, and Solwit went on to beat Segrave easily by two lengths., Night Recital, the favourite, was squeezed out at the start, and did well to finish close up third. Weatherly was fourth, and though speedy he cannot stay. Kinging Cheer was fifth. He is a three-ye'ai'-old by Hunting Song from Smoke Concert, and liable to improve a lot. ; The winner, who is in J. B. Pearson's Kiccarton stable, is a three-year-old by Solferino from Scotch Wit, a Stonyhtirstbred mare by The Ace from Scottish Star, a sister to Fleetfoot and other smart performers. Solwit is a useful sort, who will do even better later on, as he is not at his best yet. MORETON HACK HANDICAP. The Moreton Hack Handicap was spoilt by the start. Pharaoh got out on the move, followed by Homecoming and Night Parade, while some of the others did not seem ready. Pharaoh soon had a lead of four lengths, while the other pair were several lengths in front of the remainder. Ball Dress went up fast, headed Pharaoh at the half-mile post, and beat him easily by three lengths. It was a good performance by Ball Dress, who only needs to race in this fashion to win in better company. Pharaoh, however, would never
have been troubled if lie had pretensions to being a good horse. He will, however, win hack races Inter on. The others need not be discussed, as they ha no chance from the start. Craigwood lost His rider early. lie appeared to get caught iv the barrier. WAKANUI HANDICAP. First Raid, who was unlucky in his racing at Riccarton last month, made some amends by winning the Wakanui Handicap decisively. He is a pretty good sort, liable to win again soon. True Shaft, the travelling companion of Nightmarch, ran a decent race to get second, as lie was conceding nearly a stone to the winner, and his turn may come before the holidays are over. Mount ■ 3oa ran a good race to finish a close third, as lie was chopped back at the start. Great Star was one of the leaders all the way, but he failed in the straight in disappointing fashion. SELMA TROT. The Selma Trot was not so interesting as the earlier harness event. Tiny Bingen was always well placed, ami, took charge in the straight. She looked an easy winner a furlong from the post, but had to be shaken up to stall off a challenge from Checkers, a promising three-year-old carrying Mr. George M'Millan's colours. Madam Locanda, the favourite, had every chance, but faded out at the end. Details :— Highweight'Handicap, of 100 says; one mile, i —7 Dumbtane, f1.9 (H.
