WOODVILLE MEETING

TO-MORROW'S PROSPECTS

BIG FIELDS AGAIN CARDED

Fields still up to the high average set iliis season in point of numbers have accepted for the first day of the Woodville District Jockey Club's Summer Meeting to-morrow, and quality is so well represented that the racing is sure to be full of interest and the finishes closely contested. At latest advice the track was firm and in good order, and prospects ■were for fine weather. A division will be called for in the Nursery Handicap nnd in the Mangarawa Hack Handicap unless seratchings somewhat reduce the dimensions of the fields. The programme opens with the JMANGA-ATUA HACK HURDLES, of 110 soys; | one mile and a half. stlb stlb Call Again 11 3 Royal Flyer ..93 Llandudno ... •. 11 3 Kaokaoroa .... 9 2 Easterly 10 9 Evening Hero . 9 1 Mountain He«th 10 5 Black Acre ... 9 0 Shining Armour 9 9 Heartache .... 9 0 80l de Val ... 9 0 Half Acre ... 9 0 Whakaari .... 9 3 Gueress ...... 9 0 As a result of their good form at Feildjng, Easterly and Llandudno are certain to carry a lot of support in the Mangaatua Hack Hurdles. The former, particularly, is going to be very hard to beat, for she has made considerable improvement over the past six weeks, and ]ier win last Monday was very decisive. Llandudno has been set a formidable task in being asked to give weight all round, Call Again excepted, and, as ho is still inexperienced, many will prefer to see how he shapes before entrusting him with! I their money. Call Again and Shining Armour need only to show a very little improvement on their Feilding form to fee dangerous, and Mountain Heath has the pace if he can jump. Most favourably" treated on the score of weights is Kaokaoroa, who won well at Gisborne recently, and if the winner comes from Mb end of the handicap he is as likely as any to supply the judge with the {number. Two who should do as well as j»ny are Easterly and Kaokaoroa. TRIAL PLATE, of 100 soys; six furlongs; weight, all 8.11. Glider Appledore Joie de Tal Kalmuk Brambleton Arikira Enter " ■ Viaduct Flute Queanbeyan Jadarino Elizabeth Beverage . Blacksmith Intruder Gold Sand Recent form would point strongly to the chance of Appledore in the Trial 3?late, for he has been racing against the best class lately, and at his last start narrowly failed to get to Spoon 5n the three-year-old Stonyhurst Handijcap at Riccarton. Costing 1600 guineas as a yearling, he lias not yet won a race, Jbut if ever he had an outstanding opportunity of opening his account it is here. ■ The pair to whom recent running would point as likeliest to offer the main opposition are Viaduct and Joie de Val, and of them the one who may do the better 5s Viaduct, who showed up for the greater Jiart of his race at Feilding. Beverage and Flute are a couple of others who "will claim some attention. Favourites Wl probably be the Appledore-Kalmuk foraokot and Viaduct. 3BOLTON HANDICAP, of 300 soys; one mile ;■■"" • and a quarter. stlb stlb Merry Damon . 9 2 Spearmiss .... 7 5 Gay Crest ..;■. 8 9 Bold Front .. 1 5 Paratoo 7 13 Balloon 7 0 Blimp 7 8 Itoyal Game ..70 High Falutiu' .77 Kawhakina ... 70 Paiko 7 5 Tunbridge 7 0 The field for the Bolton Handicap contains a sprinkling of fair handicap performers, and the winner appears to lie near the top end of the list. The long straight will suit Merry Damon, who has been beaten several times lately by his rider's not being able to get him going quite soon enough. There should be no excuse for a fast-finishing effort almost up to the leaders at the end of this race, and on the form he showed at Feilding Merry Damon must be one of the hardest to beat. Gay Crest, on his showing in the Metropolitan; also has an c cellent chance, and so would Blimp in the mood in."which he was at Feilding. Paraloo's 6econd in the Derby was good form, taking a line through Cylinder and Praise, and at a pound tinder weight-for-age he is also more than a possibility here—indeed, he ■would read to have as good prospects as any. Most likely of those lower down is High Falutin', who has been dropped in the weights with a bump for his Riccarton failures. He is undoubtedly the handicapper's tip. Form {recently shown, however, forces one to Revert to Paratoo and Merry Damon. fcrBRSEBT HANDICAP, of 130 soys: five furlongs. ,' Krst Division. stlb stlb Chief Cook ... 8 4 Buster Brown . 7 S Hampden 8 4 St. Koger .... 7 S Haulbcwline — 713 Quexfram .... 7 3 Gay Court ... 7 9 Invite 7 3 Wchboroogh „ 7 S Anemometer ... 7 3 AM Hmnbug ..7 8 Second Division. Brteem 8 0 Black Songster 7 8 Sosral Baby ... 7 13 Chief Clerk ... 7 8 Teller .j 7 8 Bed Bufus ..7 8 Interlocutor ..7 8 Lady Noel .... 7 3 Psychologist ..7 8 Thermopylae ..7 3 The Nursery Handicap is one of the Jsaces for which a division may be necessary, two scratchings being required to reduce it to one-divisional dimensions. Three "winners are included in the field, these being Chief Cook, Hampden, and Esteem, and each of them will carry good support, but there are four others in Haulbowline, Eoyal Baby, Teller, and St. Roger who "will also have numerous friends, and it is quite probable that one of these "will add to the number of the season's two-year-old winners to-morrow. Another interesting entrant is Quexfram, who was a stablemate of Movie Star and Hunt the Slipper in Sydney, but was hot required to race on the other side, being returned by A. D. Webster with Bayacre about six weeks ago. The best ef- , forts may be coming from Haulbowline and Boyal Baby. OETE HANDICAP, of 200. soys; six furlongs. stlb ' stlb Toxemna 9 13 Cuticle 7 8 Goshawk 8 11 Atholspear 7 3 Arrow Lad ..8 1 Taranto , 7 0 Tirst Money .. 7 11 Limosin .. 7 0 Boyal Parade .79 Arrow Lad is in the Octe Handicap with a weight that suits him, and on his recent showings at Iliccarton and Feilding he is almost certain to be the public choice. Moreover, he is on his home course, and will be assisted by this factor.. Toxeuma, however, is by no mesas ■^ut of it in spite ol his 9.13, and much additional interest will be manifested in his running in view of his Railway Handicap engagement at Ellerslie. Eoyal [Parade makes most appeal of the others, but Goshawk's chance cannot be slighted, as he is reported to have been working ■well at Hastings over the past couple of ■weeks. The company would appear to be too strong for First Money. Favouritism will probably be shared by Arrow Lad and Toxeuma. WANGABAWA HACK HANDICAP, of 130 soys ; six furlongs, ' First Division, st lb sUb Tahoma 9 0 King Acre ... 7 7 Tripping 8 4 Silver Tray ..75 Statuary 8 0 Pass On 7 2 Adelphi 7 13 Patearoa 7 o Waterspear ... 7 9 King Hal .... 7 o Kalmuk 7 0 Sbootist 7 0 Second Division. Adventus 8 6 Dancing Star . 7 3 Pakitere 8 3 Money JHnt ..7 0 Rolden Shadow 8 0 Lady Spear ... 7 0 San Quex .... 7 11 Ditrnlfled Crash 7 9 March 7 n Knollmere .... 7 !l Leyland 7 I) Botheu 7 7 With five defections required" to prevent the Mangarawa Hack Handicap from being run in divisions, it is likely that bettors "will have a. chance to search for

two winners here. The issue is very open as the field stands, but Feilding running would point very definitely to the prospects of Golden Shadow, Knolhnere, and Kothen, ■ and Masterton nnd Riccarton form '•would add Tripping to the possibilities. Golden' Shadow made a fine run at the end of his Feilding race, and was somewhat unlucky in not catching Orapai, and small improvement on that effort will make him very hard to beat to-morrow. Pakitere reads well among the others, but Crash, in spite of his good track work,' does not ■ appeal because of the way he has been; closing up at the business end of his races. A pair who, favoured in other respects, should show up are Golden Shadow and Tripping. WHARITI HACK HANDICAP, of 130 soys; .one mile and a distance. stlb stlb Lordlike 8 8 Arrowhead 7 S Mount Shannon 8 3 Hawkshaw 7 5 Dainty Ways . 8 3 Klrlana 7 0 Ben Hur' 8 2 Zephyrus 7 0 Acmil ..: 8.2 Auckland Gas .70 Merry Wolody . 8 2 Spcaropa 7 0 Jayson ...... 8 1 Cessation 7 0 Arrowzonj! .... 7 11 Fallow 7 0 Pewa ..'. 7 11 Lady Alonhen . 7 0 Nca Lap' .... 7 9 The-Whariti Hack Handicap provides the puzzle of the programme, for in. it j are at least half a dozen horses among whom it iis almost impossible to discriminate, and luck in dispatch and running are going to be chief factors towards success. The'toT'-weight, Lordiike, has-been working brilliantly at Hastings recently, and on this account he will have numerous friends. Chief rivals among the big field for him would appear to be Acmil, Jayson, Arrowzone, Arrowhead, and Hawkshaw, ail of whom are in good form, and if he experiences the least set-back one of these may lead him home. Interest will be taken in the running of Nea Lap, Phar Lap's full-sister, who is at the age when her» brother was climbing the heights, and, as she is reported to have been showing a lot of promise over middle distances in her track work, she may possibly be the surprise packet. Two who should go well are Lordiike and Hawkshaw. BOROUGH HANDICAP, of 150 soys; seven fur- ■ longs. ! stlb stlb Head Serang . S 13 Hopwood 8 1 Atholspear' ... 811 Dolomite ..8 1' Desert Song' .. 8 11 Sloutoa Queen's' Choice 8 10 Treasury 7 11 Maul ...i 8 9 To Awha 7 11 Billion ...: 8 5 Mister Gamp . 7 11 Full Mark ..8 3 Rory Mor .... 7 11 Kahikatoa i 8 3 For recovery stakes investors are likely to look to the top of the list in the Borough Handicap, and Head ~Serang and Desert Song will carry confident support. However, about the bottom of the list are a group in Kahikatoa, Dolomite, and Hopwood iwho are going to be tough propositions, and they may well supply the winner.. -Hopwood and Kahikatoa both ran prominently out of a place at Feilding, and will improve, while Dolomite's recent track .work has been the best he has shown this season. Maui and Full Mark are . two others who are at their favourite distance, and each is on a dan-gerous-mark. It would not surprise to find the winner coming from Hopwood and Dolomite.
