BURDEN OF PAST DEBTS
A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of John Thomas Hill, coach painter, Wellington, was to have been held at tha office of the Official Assignee (Mr.: S, Tansley) to-day, but lapsed for want of * quorum. ' The statement of accounts showed that the bankrupt's debts amounted to £150, The assets were nil. The amounts, owing included the following:—Mr. A. James, Wellington, £37; A. Barnett and Co., drapers, Dunedin, £2S; Ballantyne and Co., drapers, Christchurch, £22; James Smith and Co., drapers, Wellington, :£22; R. M. Bussell, grocer, Wellington, £19 3* lOd. ' t • ■ . In his sworn statement, the. bankrupt said that prior to September last he was unemployed for three months, and during that time his wife and children were ill. He was working at present, hisi wages being £6 a week. • Owing to the demands of his creditors for payment, he was unable to carry on,'and therefore had to.-file his schedule. He had to pay out of his wages: £1 10s to support his wife,' £2 '5s board for himself and younger son, and £l 10s for the 'elder boy, aged 18 years. The Official Assignee said that the bankrupt had been earning £6 a week for three months, yet during that time he had not :paid his rent, and only a part of his gas bill. : ■■■■■■'•■■".." ■- In reply to a question the bankrupt'said that the drapery debts were' incurred by his wife during several years'past. He could not at present make an- offer to his creditors. _ - ' The meeting was adjourned sine die. ;• •
