RAILWAY PAY
(To the Editor.) Sir,—You published last night a letter signed "Facts/ endeavouring to discredit another correspondent, "Economy," on the ground of lack of knowledge of the conditions at the railway workshops. "Facts" refers to; the night shift, working from 4.10 p.m. till 1.40 a.m. ("nine hours for ordinary rates of pay"). In this respect has he disclosed the facts? Is it not the position that the men on the night shift elected to .work nine hours a day, on five days a week, rather than on six nights, with shorter hours, which they could do, so getting two clear days a week free; that they are paid, for the first month of their work on this shift, overtime rates from 9 p.m.; and that their night shift work lasts only three months (they oan stay longer if they personally desire), after which they are transferred to the day shift? If these are the facts, .there is less hardship about their position than "Facts" suggests.—l am, etc., FACTS IS FACTS.
