ECONOMY IN ITALY
THE COST OF LIVING
FORCING A REDUCTION
EOME, 22nd November. Following on a 12 per cent, salary reduction, a regular drive has been initiated throughout Italy to reduce the cost of living. Meetings were held to-day in every city and township in order to readapt local economy with a view to reducing the prices of bread, meat, vegetables, and rent. New prices already submitted to the Governor of Eome show a reduction of from 10 to 12 per cent, on foodstuffs. Scores of landlords have announced rent reductions. At present, all changes are voluntary, but ..public opinion is so strong that anybody withholding would find himself hounded out of business. The vigorous campaign has proved so effective that salary reductions already are balanced by the new spending value of the lira.
