WREATHS ON TOMBS

ABANDONING THE CUSTOM

WASHINGTON, 22nd Nov. The British Government's proposal to abandon the custom, of the laying of wreaths by. distinguished foreign visitors on the tombs of Unknown Soldiers has been accepted by the. Washington Government on condition that its coming into force will depend upon acceptance by a majority of Powers.

After suggesting to the nations that envoys and missions should no longer feel it incumbent upon them to lay wreaths upon the tomb uf the Unknown Warrior in the country they arc visiting, tho British Government pointed out, in a statement issued on 2th October, that the object was simply "to obviate any risk of a ceremony which should be simple and spontaneous, becoming a mere formality of international courtesy."
