RANDWICK UPSETS

From "Vedette."

SYDNEY, 17th September.

Saturday's racing at. Randwick caused some revision of ideas of Epsom and Metropolitan fancies. So far as New Zealand horses were concerned Paquito and Gay Crest performed with credit in the Spring Handicap, and drew attention to their Metropolitan prospects. Paquito carried 91b over his Metropolitan weight, and Gay Crest 21b over. Honours were with Paquito, who came from behind to beat' Gay Crest. Gay Crest will improve yet, however, while Paquito is strung right up. First Acre was favourite for this event with 7.12, receiving, like Gay Crest, 161b from Paquito. _ Ho had every chance, but finished sixth. Ho requires somo more racing. Eaglet 8.4 received a very bad run, but as she was ridden by the Sydney jockey E Bartle, there was no adverse comment. Bagby no doubt would have been crucified by the critics. Dalston was a tuu ncr in this event, but he failed to s«tav after he had been set a -very sevw task. ' " " As an Epsom trial, the tramway Handicap result brought consternation in its train. Tho seven-year-old Killarney, trained by George Price,- starting at double figures, finished on to ! beat Fuji San, who was one of the last away, and a thrco-yc'ar-old rank outsider in Porneit. Epsom fancies in Tom Pinch, High Disdain, Pentheus, and Wungoola all finished out of a place. High Disdain cut up badly, and Jfinishcd well back. Compared with his track work his form was all wrong. Goshawk, Gesto, Gay Ballerina, Vallar, and Hard Words all ran moderately. Of the beaten lot Tom Pinch will be,, improved by tho run, and Pentheus will do better in thoEpspm ; niore.,p/a.tiently ridden ancl9lb off his back..,. • ...; <• Killarney's win brought him. up,to the second line in the Epsom .with. Holdfast and Tom Pinch, with Ipeiitheus still favourite. Mollison,': .Highi;.lMs<dain, First Sight, Fuji San, Dominant,, .and Gay Ballerina are nest 'mv .request. Paquito is now.a short-priced:' favourite for the Metropolitan, with" Cragford. .Waterline, Concentrate, John. Bu.ehan. Gay Crest, In the Shade, and.Dalston following. Bookmakers' report .much less, money about, the .totalisator showed a decrease at Bandvvick on .Saturday of £12,000, and the/attendance, shrunk er0m.40,000 last year -:to. .30,000,:':.;. '
