SHAMROCK OUTSAILED

The yachts got away at 10.40, the Shamrock ' securing the weather berth and crossing the line to starboard with Enterprise footing faster. The breeza was steady, ten knots, with little sea, favouring the challenger, which tacked to port a few minutes later, followed by the Enterprise. The smallest spectator fleet of the series was present. ; The. Shamrock, driving into a fresh-' ening breeze of fourteen knots, with * choppy sea, overcame the slight lead secured by the Enterprise after the start, and opened up a 280 yards gap over the defender, which was carrying a mainsail, jib, and jib topsail The Shamrock was under mainsail and jib. ENTERPRISE TAKES LEAD. Although the Enterprise nad worked to the weather side, the Shamrock outfooted her, opening up a lead in the first twenty minutes in a choppy sea believed to be unsuitable for her. Half an hour after the start the Shamrock doused her baby jib topsail, which wa3 evidently hauling her offwind. Vanderbilt then seemed half a mile to windward picking up speed, and at 11.25 went ahead, continuing to open up a lead estimated at a mile. The Shamrock sailed a course shoreward across the wind, evidently seeking smoother water. Apparently realising that she was losing valuable ground, she came about at 11.30, followed by the Enterprise, which held a straight course N to windward. The Shamrock's crew appeared to be making desperate efforts to work her to windward, shifting jib topsails, but the Enterprise continued to gain a lead. It was estimated at 11.45 that she was a mile and a half ahead. She rounded the first marker in 85 minutes 15 seconds. The Shamrock rounded ia 92 minutes 14 seconds. ; On the second Jeg, a close reach, the breeze freshened to eighteen knots. The Enterprise rounded the second mark in 51 minutes 51 seconds. Thp Shamrock, pulling up somewhat, rounoed the mark seven minutes later. THE LAST LAP. Both boats turned nicely, setting homeward with the wind on the beam. On the reach both logged around about twelve knots,, with the Enterprise holding a lead approximately of a mile and a quarter at the twenty-mile mark. At 1.30, with the finishing line five miles away, the Enterprise broke out her ballooner, the Shamrock having carried her ballooner from the turn and appearing to be gaining slightly. The Enterprise completed- the thirtymile course in 2 hours 50 minutes 5 seconds, retaining the America Cup. The Shamrock completed the' course in 2 hours 55 minutes 55 seconds.
