MORE AMMUNITION

ENCOURAGING RIFLE CLUBS

(Special to "The EVeninfl Post.")

MASTERTON, This Day.

Reference was made at the annual meeting of the Opaki Eifle Club last night to the all-round increases in the allowances of ammunition,to; members of rifle clubs which -were announced on Tuesday by the Minister of Defence. Tho increases, it was pointed but, have been made with the object of fostering rifle shooting, and.as some compensation for the reduced amount placed on the Defence Estimates for this year. Mr. L. Hill said he understood the new regulation proposed provided for a free issue of 250 rounds per annum to all members of rifle clubs who qualified in the musketry course, and 300 rounds to each member who qualified as a marksman. At present, he said, no ammunition was given to the new member until he had fired his musketry course. Now, however, it was proposed to givo him 200 rounds immediately he was attested. To encourage Territorials to join rifle clubs, he added, each such member would, on being attested, receivo 300 rounds free, and also an issue on loan of a rifle.

Mr. E. J. King was of opinion that such ammunition received should go to those who earned it—the men who came out and did their class firing. He considered that the new regulations would tend- to encourage men to join rifle clubs. . ■ • ■ ■ .
