UPSETTING THE PROGRAMME.
The programme of Estimates laid down by the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. B. A. Ransom) was challenged by the Leader of the Opposition (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coates) in the House of Representatives last night. Mr. Coates said he wanted to enter the strongest possible protest against the Railway Estimates being considered that evening, before the Railway Statement had been discussed. Daring the whole of the time he had been in the House he had never known such a procedure to be followed. The question of railway construction was one that was occupying the minds of every member of the House, and the general public as well, and he asked that the consideration of the Estimates should be deferred.
Mr. E. J. Howard (Labour, Christchurch South) supported Mr. Coates. Probably there was nothing before the House this session which was of such vital importance as the railways problem, and it was only right that the report should be discussed before the Estimates.
Mr. Eansom said he was only anxious that the Estimates should be put through as expeditiously as possible. He was quite prepared to take other classes of the Estimates if ilie House so desired.
The Houso agreed to postpone the consideration of the Railway Estimates.
