GOOD CROSS-COUNTRY FINISH

Gala Dny was the only scratching in the Wai-Hi Steeplechase at Tiinaru on Saturday, leuving o field of eight. -Valves was a pronounced favourite, while, after a gap, Tunamoe, Diamond Jack, French Fleet, and Eadiac were evenly supported. French Fleet led out from Diamond Jack, Valves, Bonatic, and Tunamoe. There was not much change in the order of the leaders at the end of five furlongs, when Barrihgton 'foil, while Paradcr refuse! at the brush fence in the straight. Valves and Tuiiamoe were just in front of Diamond Jack; French Fleet, and Bonatic passing the stand. Bonatie fell at the second of tile stand double. Valves, Tunamoe, French Fleet, and Diamond Jack wero in close order turning into the back stretch, with Radiac ten lengths away. Valves and Tunamoe commenced to draw away five furlongs from home, and racing for the straight they had a long lead. The pair fought out a great finish. There was not, much between them for the rest of the way, Valves beating Tunamoe in the last few strides by half a length. French Fleet was a dozen lengths away, .beating Kadiae by a length. Diamond Jack fell at the last fence. The winner ia only a novice at crosscountry racing, but he looks like developing into a good performer. He has plenty pf speed and is a fast jumper.
