HASTINGS MINOR EVENTS

A Poor Affair. Rakaiiponga, who had the distinction of beating the Great Northern winner, King's Jest, at Napier Park last month, had little difficulty in beating the four moderates opposed to him iv the Haveloek Hurdles at Hastings on Saturday. Moreover, he returned a great price. Purseful, Wyeford, High Society, and Air Force raced in line alidad of Bakauponga to the first fence, and at the .third Wyeford fell. Purseful arid:Rakaiiponga led past the standsr.with High Society and Air Force in the rear. Purseful jumped badly five furlongs from home,' and - High Society joined Rakauponga in the lead. They raced together to the last fence, over which Rakauporiga drew away to win by three lengths from High Society, who beat Air Force by ten lengths. Purseful was a furlong back. Rakauponga handled the ground well, and was too experienced for High' Society, who gave an improved display and should soon win over hurdles.. Air Force went a poor race, and Purseful stopped badly. Amongst the Amateurs. The amateur riders' event at Hastings on Saturday,. the Ladies' Handicap, saw Kory Mor, a good favourite, make a fine effort,; but 12.9 anchored him into third place. Corneroff, Whakaue, and Alimarimba led Break o' Day and Tamworth for seven furlongs. Break o' Day then rushed 11 t i to the leaders, and Rovy Mor closed up. Whukaue and Corneroff were doing best a furlong off the post, with Rory Mor making his effort. Whakaue drew out over the last bit to win by a length and a half from' Corneroff, who beat l?ory Mor by two lengths. Break o' Day and Tamworth were next. Whakaue will win minor hurdle race 3 later on, although the class was' p<sor. , ' Again the Best Friend. Best Friend gave another taste of his improved quality in the Kaukaim Handicap'af Hastings on Saturday.-; Ho had; it: great run to the turn and then struck trouble, from which only a'good ; horse could .have , extricated himself and won. Owing.- to good backing of Courageous^ Wbakaari; and Adventus,1 he returned a much better price than on the first: day, Adventus, Best, Friend. ' and Winldch began best from Whakaari and High Heather, with Primrose: last. .Tahpuinmoved up smartly six furlongs from.home,, and with Adventus showed the way to Best Friend, >\rinloch, and Mothplane. Adventus,'T.ahoma, and Mothplane turned for home just ahead of Best Friend, Courageous, Winloch, arid Whakaari. A little more than ,'a furlong from home Best Friend floundered and lost ground just when making his run. Gray soon had him going again, and ridden hard he won at ,the finish gding away by two lengths from Adventus, who beat Mothplane by four lengths. ' Tahoma, Courageous, Whakaari, and Wiuloch were next. Adventus and Mothplane ran good races, being far from disgraced.' Courageous registered an improved effort. Tahoma shaped 'well. Winloch was disappointing. A Desperate Finish. ■ Racegoers flaw a great tussle in the Final Handicap, with which the Hawkes Bay Meeting concluded, Llyn Dim, Paiko. find Aston going over the line separated by the shortest of margins. Llyn Dim returned a good double figure dividend. Golden Shadow and Aston shot out at barrier-rise, but Paiko soon went up, and with Aston led round to the turn fi-onr Golden Shadow, Potoaform, Borncra, Queen's Choice, and Llyu Dhu. The last-

named closed nn the leaders at the turn. Aston hung on well, but Llyn Dhu would not be denied, and forged ahead to win by half a neck. Desperately ridden, Faiko beat Aston by a nose for second. Golden Shadow was well back fourth, ahead of Bernera and Queen's Choice. JJyn Dim finished very solidly, and the feature of the race was the good ami surprising style in which Aston hung on, for Taiko just beat him. Golden Shadow inn a lairrace, and Ber'nern improved a little. I'otouform shaped well to" the turn. ' JMoiitoa Treasury, a sound favourite, was a complete failure.
