MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. T. 13. M'Neil, S.M., presided at a sitting of tho Magistrate's Court this morning. ■ ' ■

1 On a- charge of casting offensive matter in a public place, In'golf Nilsen, a seuman, aged 30, was convicted and fined £1, and on a charge of drunkenness he' was convicted and discharged.

One second offender for drunkenness was fined £1, and a first offender was convicted and discharged. On a charge of stealing a hamper's outfit of a total value of £2o 6s 6d, the property of Hugh Bcirlcy Timms, Archibald John Clifford Searle, a motor salesman, aged 28, was remanded until ■ next Monday.

On two charges of theft of money, totalling 15s, Edwin Victor Culliford, a labourer, aged 20, was admitted to the Borstal Institute for a period of 12 months. Detective-Sergeant Tricklebartk said the accused stole tho money from a drawer in a house where he was staying. Mr, T. P. Mills, probation officer, said that the accused was at present' on probation 'on a charge of theft. His conduct was fair, but ho had not been doing much work, and Mr. Mills suggested ho was more a subject for the Borstal Institute than anything else. Mr. 'M'Neil said that the accused apparently needed something more than probation, and he would adopt Mr. Mills's suggestion.
