An attempt was made in the Legislative Assembly to amend the Unemployed Belief Bill to provide for a su-per-tax on incomes, so that a stamp tax might be substituted, but the amendment on these lines was defeated by 26 votes to 20. '• It is expected that three-quarters of a million sterling will be raised for 1111" employment relief. < The proposals in the Victorian Unemployment. Belief Bill, briefly, are to raise approximately £800,000 for the relief of unemployment by imposing a, special tax upon every person whose taxable income was &1 or upwards during the year ended 30th.June last. The tax is to operate for one year only. The ordinary statutory exemption has been levered from .£2OO to £100 in certain cases. The tax is payable on each &1 of tho taxable income. The official estimate of the amount proposed to be raised by the unemployment relief tax -will be derived as follows:— Incomes between £101 and £200 .. £140,0«» Incomes between £201 and £500 .. £235.009 Incomes between £501 and £1000 . £100,OflB Incomes between £ 1000 and £2000 £100,« M Incomes between £2000 and upwirds £160,«()0
