"The prize-winners at last year's festival will receive certificates in lieu of prize money," said Mr. A. Menzies, president of the Auckland Competitions Society, when his attention was drawn - to the complaints'of prize-wianers that they had not received their prizes. '"The-junior competitors have already been given medals, and adults will get their certificates in due course. Since the musical and elocutionary festival was held last October,; the society, has found itself in an awkward financial predicament. A loss of £300 was incurred on > the festival, and accumulated losses, which have been mounting over the preceding four years, now approximate £1000, which is owing, to' a large number of . creditors. A few guarantors made themselves responsible for drawings from thVbank. up to the limit of . £300, and the overdraft has now reached that figure. The amount of unpaid prize money is" approximately £100.''
