PARNELL BY-ELECTION
WIDE RANGE OF TALK
BIG GUNS IN ACTION
I (By Teleoraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The by-election campaign in Darnell, which has been proceeding briskly up to the present, is 'having further life infused into it by the entry of several prominent political,'; gladiators. , The lion. G. W. Forbes had a turn on tho platform and as a diversion then went on a tour of the. North, whore,' it is interesting to note, ho has been accompanied by the Leader of the Opposition (the Eight Hon. J, G. Coates), in the hitter's capacity as tho member for Kaipara. The Hon. E. A. Eansom has now made his appearance, speaking last evening in the centre of the Parnell borough in support of the Government candidate, Mr. W. A. Donald. The: Hon. W. A. Veitch, who has already appeared in the campaign, will make a, second appearance this evening at Kohimarama. 6 ' ■ The Reform candidate. Mr. W. P. Endean, is having assistance from the big. guns of his party.- 'Mr. B. A. .Wright, has had his finger in thePar"nell pie this week, as he expressed it. Mr. H. Holland, member for Christchurch North, will be the next. He will speak at Mr. Endean Js meeting at St. Helier 's to-night. Special interest attaches to the coming visit of the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Finance in the late Beform Government, • who will review the financial policy of the United Party in a speech at Bemuera, the centre of the Parnell electorate, on Friday evening. Mr. Stewart will also speak at Mr. Endean's meeting in another hall at Beniuera on Saturday evening. The Labour candidate, Mr. T. Bloodworth, is likewise about, to receive, strong aid from the leading members of, his party. Mr. M. J. Savage, the deputy-leader of the party, who is acting as campaign organiser,, is working steadily, and ,on Saturday Mr. H. E. Holland, the Leader of the patty, and Miy P. Fraser, and Mr. W. Nash, M.P.:s, are expected to arrive from Wellington to enter the fray. They will probably remain here until the closfl of the campaign. _ The speeches have covered an unusually wide range of topics. Christopher Columbus has been quoted in some connection loy one candidate, while even the Greeks of old have been cited, Socrates and Diogenes having been mentioned. The Government candidate has not taken any part in, these incursions into ancient history. ''As far as I am concerned," said Mr. Donald on Tuesday evening, "Diogenes and Socrates' will be'-non starters in the campaign, as presentday problems are more pressing.'•'■ .'„.■'"' Mr. Donald might have added that the housing question was not one that gave Diogenes'any concern in the blissful days of long ago.
