THE LATE MR. F. MARTIN

Mr. Frank ("Paddy") Martin, of Auckland, who, as reported in yesterday's "Post," was drowned, on Monday night near Taupiri when his motor-car went over a bridge at a dangerous bend and into the Mangawara Stream, was a brother of Mr. R. E. J. Martin, a member of the Rugby Referees' Appointment Board, and a well-known senior referee in Wellington. The late Mr. Frank Martin will be remembered by many as a Rugby player in Wellington when the Wednesday matches were in vogue. He was a five-eighth, and played mostly for Oriental and the Tramways Club. When the accident occurred, Mr. Martin was on his way to Wellington to visit his brother, who within an hour of receipt of advice of the departure from Auckland, was advised of the mishap. His death is the fourth suffered by the family in twelve months, and Mr. R. E. J. Martin himself also met with an accident at the beginning of this year through being run down by a motor-car, and has not yet completely recovered. The deceased, who was not a taxi proprietor, as stated in the message from Auckland yesterday, but conducted a carrying business in Auckland, leaves a widow and two daughters. Mr. T. J. Daly, head trainer for Mr. Kemball at Trentham, is a halfbrother. The late Mr. Martin left Auckland with the Main Body, and was at the Gallipoli landing. He was wounded four times during the war.
