NORFOLK ISLAND TRADE
NO STEAMER AVAILABLE
(By Telegraph.) , ( (Special to "The Evening Post.") '. AUCKLAND, This Day. There is no prospect of the Government providing a St,cani ship service' between New Zealand and Norfolk Island, according to a letter received this morning by Mr. M. Stewart, president of the Auckland Chamber « Commerce, from. Siv Apiraua Ngata, Minister of Cook. Islands. Sir Apirana Ngata said that the Maui Pomare is required for her lull time in the Niue and Samoa trades, and nothing is available for the Norfolk service. Mr. Stewart, commenting on tno decision, saia now it appeared definite that the Maui Pomare would not be available for the Norfolk Island trade, an'opportunity existed for private enterprise to take it up, and it was hoped privato enterprise would rise to the occasion.'There were considerable possibilities of increased traffic. > between New Zealand and Norfolk. To _ make | the service a successful venture in the long run, there was need for immediato action,-otherwise there was a danger of the trade being diverted to Australia. • ' ' ' • \ ■ ' .
