COST OF A BRIDGE
WATER BOARD AND COUNTY
BOARD'S SHARE RAISED
The question of the contribution by the Water.Board towards the construction of the Kaiapota Bridge was raised again at the meeting of the board today, when the Hutt County Council wrote asking for a larger contribution from the board in view of the fact that three-quarters of the traffic... over it would come from tho board's own reserve. ■ , . . The Mayor (Mr. Troup) said that the board's funds were restricted. He thought the contribution (£250) offered was generous, as the board was not legally entitled to make ( any contribution at all. Ho thought no more should be paid. j Mr. AY. Dyer (Hutt County) said that J his body was disappointed with the coii- j tribution. Last year the board had an unexpended balance of over £2000. A further contribution would not embarrass tho board. If the Hutt County did not receive further assistance, the millers would ask for concessions in royalty from the board. He moved as an amendment that tho contribution be £500. The Mayor said that if the principle were carried out of relieving the Hutt County the same difficulty would arise in other ridings. The royalties would not be affected, as they could be insisted upon. Messrs. Dyer and Bobertson were both, emphatic that a ford had already been tried and was impracticable, and very costly to traffic. The amendment was lost. A further amendment, by Mr. Eobertson, that £350 be the amount of the contribution, was carried.
