SCOTS COLLEGE
LETTER FROM SIR CHARLES PEKGUSSON . ■' .
At tho commencement of tho new terra of Scots College, Mr.. J. T. Martin, Chaiiman of tho Board, in introducing Mr. T. D. Pearce, M.A., as Prineiioal for the ensuing throe months, stated that the Board of Governors was fortunate- in getting for the x^ositioii, a man possessing such ripe experience and of such high standing. He hoped that under Mr. Pearce's able guidance the boys would have a most successful tornii - . '
Mr. Martin then referred to-the interest always displayed by . the late Governor-General in the 'work of Scots College, and read the following letter from Sir Charles Fergusson, written before his departure . ; from New Zealand:—
Dear Mr. Martin, —I am very sorry that the date of my. departure, from New Zealand should be such that X have no 'opportunity of paying another visit to >Soctts'College. 'I have .always been much interested in the College, not only in a general, way on account of tbo -boys, -but 'because I am a very strong-believer in educational lishments of this kind, where boys live together and can bo brought under direct :and constant influence of the best sort; The old public schools at Home are a striking example "of tho benefits so derived, schools;where traditions are built-up and .maintained, and ill which, a definite stamp is sot on the boys who grow up in suclv influences. this advantage is still greater, when the, school is under direct association'with a'Church- 'Not only do the boys benefit from tho atmosphere so, engendered, but tno Church itself 'is immensely strengthened by the school being a nursery for young people brought up under Church influences, and all that that implies., I ■am' happy to think that Scots College has weathered the storm that lately arose, and is now re-es-tablished—l wish it all success and prosperity."
