SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Perfect weather conditions, close finishes, and a smartly carried out programme combined to make the swimming carnival held in Te Aro Baths, under the auspices of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Association on Saturday enjoyable. Both the centre championship diving and open diving presented neat work. Tuffen's screw diving and somersaults were good, but he was closely run by Penman. The ladies' diving was especially even.
'The following are the results:— 50 Yards Handicap.—First heat: W. Hoy (4sec) 1, L. Dawkins (3sec) 2, R. Henderson (6sec) 3. Six started. Time, 29 l-sseo. Second heat: S. Grouudsell (7sec) 1, J. Hewitt (6sec) 2, R. M'lntyre (3see) 3 Nine started. Time, 30 3-ssee. Third heat: 0. Olliver (sseo) 1, E. Raven (ssec) 2, A. de Costa (Ssec) 3. Bight started. Time, 29 4-ssec. Final: Groundsell 1, Olliver 2, Raven 3. Time, 31 2-ssec. Groundsell finished strongly, but Raven cut down his>lead in the last few yards, and missed the race only by a stroke. 50 Yards Centre Championship.—N. Dowsett (Hutt Valley) I, C. Claridge (Mavanui) 2, J. Blakeley (Wellington) 3. Won by a head. Time, 26 3-ssee. (Record 25 i-ssec.) . . Duthie Cup, 200 yards, Primary School Boys' Championship Relay.—Clyde Quay, the holders, 1; Mount Cook, 2; Lyall Bay, 3 Won easily by fifteen yards, five yards betwceii second and third. Time, 2min 3Ssec.' Eastern Hutt, with good placing, was disqualified for breaking away too soon. Maxwell Trophy; 200 yards,: Secondary School Girls' Championship Relay.—Wellington College A (M. Ongley, Z. Clarke, K. Dick, and M. Mayei) 1, Hutt Valley High School (P. Price, I. Price, B. M'Laren, and B. Olphert) 2, Wellington East High School (P. Tanner, I. Staples, O. Jackson, and M. Eustiel) 3. Time, 2min 45 2-ssec. A splnndid finish, Zena Clarke finishing well with a big lead for the last length, which Peggy Price cut down to nothing, only to Jose by a touch through fouling the guides in the last second. Claridge (Maranui) was given a good start by his team mates, nnd won by some 30 yards, but second, third, and fourth were separated only by d touch. Time, amin 22 3-ssec. Coltman Cup, 200 yards, Primary School Girls' Championship, Relay.—Clyde Quay 1, Hataitai 2, Hutt Central 3. Time, 3min Msec.
