RED CROSS GARDEN FETE
Delightful weather favoured Saturday's garden party in the Hospital grounds ix aid of wireless equipment for the Ewart Ward. The arrangements of the Wellington Red Cross Society were complete in every way, the organisation of the fete being such as to onsuro its successful conclusion. The grounds presented a very gay appcaranco, being transformed for tho occasion into a real fair. Patients from tho Hospital, in various stages of convalescence, were present, among them Captain Galloway, M.C., secretary of tho Bod Cross Society, who was cordially received by many friends aud wellwishers.
/Mr. C. M. Luke, chairman of the Hospital Board, in opeuing the fete, commended the; Eed Cross Society for its valuablo assistance to tho board in connection with the effort to supply the Ewart Ward with a wireless installation. The society's efforts on behalf of the Victoria Ward, culminating in a sum of £200 being raised for that ward, were also eulogised.' The board, being unable by its constitution to spend money on wkeless or musical instruments, was grateful to the society for its assistance, since music played such a great part in helping the sick. He hoped the sum required, £200, v.'ould be forthcoming.
Stalls were dotted about tho beautiful grounds, and good business was reported. Among tho energetic ladies were the following stallholders: Cakes, Mesdames Ellers, Thorne, Cameron, and Miss Murphy; sweets, Mrs. Angas, Missos Eager, Brown, and Meutiplay; produce, Mrs. M. W. Miller, Mesdames Grant, Hamilton, Pottinger, and Missos Cambourne,Harris, and Collins; flower stall and pot plants, Mrs. C. H. Chapman, with Mesdames F. T. Moore, D. Mooro, and Nannestad; soft drinks and ico cream, Mesdame3 Sol. Myers' and Pow; miscellaneous, Mrs. Hendry and Mis sB. Bown; books and fancy, ladies of the Hospital Auxiliary under Mrs. Hayrnan and Mrs. Phillips-Turner. Member's of the Hospital nursing staff also rendered valuable assistance in connection with the last-named stall, having, worked hard for some time previously producing many articles of value and utility...'._ .There were side shows galore, a "Pied Piper of Hamelin," who led all to the "Punch and Judy" entertainment of Messrs. Lansdowne and Keans; a "witch" with her broom complete, and numerous novelties that arrested attention and drew money from pockets and purses cheerfully. Sister J. E. Lewis and Sister Lees, with Eed Cross and V.A.. Nurses, had a busy time in the tea-room. The fete was further enlivened by the. playing of the Artillery Band, under Captain T. Herd. The patients in the women's ward, Victoria Hospital, wish to thank Miss Freedman for visiting and . supplying afternoon tea to tho patients while the garden party was in progress on Saturday afternoon. Her kindness was greatly appreciated.
