Chief-i)etective LopdeiF said that the accused had been observed around the town by tho police during the past two or three weeks. He represented himself as a strong man with f .a rope, and he .invited people .to tie hini. up-so; that he : <fonld oscape.:f ''He appears to^haVe: any. auiount of strength, but does not apply it to hard work," said the Chief Detective. There had been further complaints about Owen's behaviour around hotels. On one occasion he had asked a: business man for some money, and when this had^been 4 refused Owen swore at him in the presence ■ o.f ladies,_ using particularly, indecent' language; i'romVthe dock, Owen -asked for another chance.
