EXPENSIVE FISH
Allegations that -they had.used an acetylene lamp and a "jag" in the .course of a; fishing expedition, were made against three youths in the Magistrate's Court -.to-day, when-"they were charged with using au unlawful device for the purpose of catching trou';,":
The facts, as stated by, Mr. 'P.Willson, were that the defendants were seen wading in the Karori stream carrying the lamp, and each had a jag. They were watched by the ranger, who saw them make repeated efforts with the jags. When he accosted them they denied taking trout, saying that they were after eels, but after further questioning one of the accused produced two trout.
Mr. E. Page, S.M., said that he proposal to convict two of the boys, but there seemed to be an element of doubt in the case of the third, and the charge against him would be dismissed. The minimum fine according to the Statute was £2.
Asked by the; Magistrate what he did, one. of the other two said he had no parents. Ho was eighteen years of age, and worked on a farm at Enron, where he got los a week and his keep.
The other boy said he worked on the same farm, but out of hi» 15s each week he had to pay as towards helping to keep v his younger brothers and sisters. He was sixteen years, of age, and also had no parents*. : "... . - . : Each of the defendants was fined £2 and ordered to pay the costs,, which, amounted to £1. They will be allowed ' to pay the fine off at ihe rate of 10s a week. , , ' ■~. / , '■'",■.
