DAIRY FACTORY AWARD
CLAIMS AND COUNTER-CLAIMS

■The hearing of a claim for a new *ward, made by the employers to cover creamery, cheese, and butter factory workers, was concluded in the Arbitration Court. The proposal of the employers was practically a renewal of tho existing award, but the union askedfor a decrease in the hours'of work, and for an increase in wages.
The employers asked that in' butter factories from 15th August to 15th March the hours of work.be 56 for a seven-days week, and that from 16th March to 14th August, the hours be 44 also for a,week.of seven days. In. cheese factories the hours asked for were CO.weekly from 14th July to 14th May, and 48 weekly for the remainder of the year, seven days weekly to be worked in each case. . ■
The union asked for hours not exceeding 48 weekly to be worked on six days, and for overtime to be paid ; if nine hours were exceeded on any one day. An all-round increase in wages was sought as'follows:—First assistant in factory where 15 hands are einpioyed> £5 3s 6d to £5 10s; second assistant, £4 17s Cd to £5 4s; third assistant, £410s 6d to £4 17s; other workers, £4 Is to £4 7s Cd. A wage of £6 a week was claimed for cream graders, who have not hitherto been covered by an award.
The decision of the Court was reServed. . ■
