"The second officer of tho American steamship/Captain A. F.;Lucas, recently Sported to tho "Hydrographxo Bulletin" an Westing condition of mirage' oft the coast of Oregon. American mariners■frequently have reported mirages of .staking Vividness on the Alaskan coast,-but seldom Io far south as Washington or Oregon Tho officer's attention was tost attracted to the coa s t when north of the Hecate Head lighthouse by the 'spilling of water on tho same level as the lighthouse down to the line of the breakers.' Then arose out of the water off the! vessel's bow a black rectangular object, its top.and sides washed ■by great breakers. Its forecastle head and bridge rose high above the deck, and, like the remainder of. tlio vessel, were 'distorted and out of all proportion. .The strange craft finally, dropped out ,ot -Bight as mysteriously as Had the elbuds of spray and the inverted lino of breakers.'^
