NEW ZEALAND UNION
BEQUESTS FROM VICTORIA
The New Zealand Rugby Union's Management Committee met last evening, Mr. S. S. Dean presiding. Others present were: Messrs. A. C. Kitto, H. S. Lcith, J. G. Eoachc, T. A. Fletcher, E. M'Konzie, and E. Wylio. A grant, of £25 towards the cost of the tour made last season by a Canterbury team to Nelson, Marlborongh, and Golden Bay-Motueka was made to the Canterbury. Union. According to a letter placed before ■ the committee, there is no certainty about the visit to be paid to Melbourne by the British ltugby team being a financial success. The lion, secretary oi the Victorian Rugby Union wrote asking: "Would the New Zealand Union guarantee us against loss on our match against England on the 13th September1? In the event of the Engvsh tour proving a <hiancial success to the Now Zealand Union, would they be prepared to refund 50 per cent, of the 60' per cent, which this union is to be charged with by the New South Wales Rugby Union?" It was pointed out that the Victorian Rugby Union had bee* very heavily hit financially during the last two seasons. Endeavours were being made to form a junior grade, and it was suggetsed that it would- be an incentive if the New Zealand Rugby Union would donate a shield for competition. "They have received*good assistance from this union and from New South Wales," remarked Mr. S. S. Dean. "As much as I would like to see Rugby progress in Melbourne, I think it is hopeless to spend money there." It was decided to reply expressing regret that, the New Zealand Union could not meet the requests.
