TARDIEU'S DEFEAT

FUTURE,OF CONFERENCE

DELAY OF A FEW DAYS

LONDON, 17th February

To-night tho immediate future proceedings of tho Conference were thrown out of gear by the sudden defeat of the Tardieu Government.

When the details of the cause of the defeat were received, it was discussedat .French headquarters. It was the opinion that the oyent at tho most would cause a delay of a few _ days only in carrying on tho negotiations. The only French Minister in London to-night is M. Leygues, who as soon as he received the news telephoned M. Tardieu, speaking.^ from a sick bed, instructed him to remain in London at present and continue the work of tho delegation. As no Ministry is in being, M. Leygues' will not at prosent be able to carry on actual'negotiations with the heads of other delogations. : French circles agree that it is most probable tho whole affair will prove a storm in a tea cup, and that within a few days M. Tardieu will reconstruct tho Ministry and take one or two Ministers from tho Left, which he has wanted to do for some time, and then carry on. agahi. ~.-.' ' It is oinphasispd; however, that no changes in the Ministry practicable in tho present Chamber are likely to materially alter tho French memorandum setting out, her naval needs, which arc a mere reproduction of tho programmo formulated originally several years ago, aiid which most parties in tho Chamber approved. It is learned jfrom a trustworthy French source that there is not the least chance of areduetion in tho programme unless some sort of Mediterranean security pact is obtainable.
